Bitter Little World
by Betty Jo Tucker

Hopelessly addicted to film noir, Charles Pappas is the author of It's a Bitter Little World. Looking at the world through blood-tinted glasses, Bitter celebrates the hardboiled and harlot language of the genre's classics from The Maltese Falcon to U Turn, and more. Now updating the book and increasingly "Bitter," he lives In Rochester, MN. A mild-mannered writer for Exhibitor magazine, covering the Shanghai World Expo, and a grandfather, he's still moderately dangerous. (Thanks to Pappas for sending me that colorful bio! Like film noir itself, he has a way with words.)

Pappas, who visits Movie Addict Headquarters on December 7th to talk about film noir, gathered the best of this genre’s screenplay treasures into his terrific book, which is subtitled The Smartest, Toughest, Nastiest Quotes from Film Noir. Clearly, he loves these cynical, dark movies about losers who seek the very thing that gets them killed. Pappas plans to discuss his favorite film noir movies, stars, directors and dialogue during the December 7th episode.

Here are some of the films included in It’s a Bitter Little World:

OUT OF THE PAST

THE MALTESE FALCON

DOUBLE INDEMNITY

GILDA

CHINATOWN

PULP FICTION

THE USUAL SUSPECTS

U-TURN

L. A. CONFIDENTIAL

TOUCH OF EVIL

THE BIG SLEEP

THE LAST SEDUCTION

RESERVOIR DOGS

According to film critic Phil Hall, Pappas is “a smart, sharp observer of all things cinematic." About It’s a Bitter Little World, Hall says, “Spanning the cinematic experience from the 1940s up to the present, with occasional trips across the Atlantic for snatches of Euro-noir, Pappas has brought the best of noir-talk together into a single collection.”

The Charles Pappas interview airs on BlogTalkRadio at 4 p.m. Eastern Time (1 p.m. Pacific Time) on Tuesday, December 7th. During the live show, listeners are invited to call in and to participate in a Chat. An archived segment will also be available.
