A Delightfully Funny Web Series
by Betty Jo Tucker

Two women of a certain age struggle to navigate through a youth-oriented culture in Carbon Dating, a delightfully funny Web series now in Emmy consideration. And, guess what? Because the first season includes nine episodes from five to eight minutes long, you can “binge watch” it under one hour. And I highly recommend doing just that. You won’t be sorry!

Every episode boasts excellent production/direction values. Each one is also well-written, humorous and performed splendidly by cast members, especially Amanda Serra, Marcie Barkin and Michael Gross. Amanda and Marcie play best friends with very different personalities -- but who actually complement each other during their sometimes awkward and often whimsical adventures. Portraying a romantic interest, veteran actor Michael Gross adds considerably to the fun. I call this a perfect casting trifecta.

While watching Carbon Dating, I couldn’t help wondering how these talented actors felt about the amusing characters they play in the series, so I asked each of them to send me an e-mail answer to my question “What did you enjoy the most about portraying your assigned character in Carbon Dating?” Below are their enlightening responses.

From Amanda Serra (Amelia): Amelia is fun because she is enthusiastic and intelligent, but happily oblivious of social cues -- tact is not one of her strengths.  I love that Amelia's playful impishness surfaces at the worst moments.

From Marcie Barkin (Madelyn): When I read the scripts, I realized that despite Maddy’s recurring disappointments, humiliations and constant simmering righteous anger about so many “age related injustices"… she never loses hope, optimism and an ability to fantasize about succeeding. It was this juxtaposition of emotions that made me grin at the thought of playing her.

From Michael Gross (Chris): I think what tickled me most was the discovery that, at whatever age a man pursues romance, he still feels like a teenager.  The old song reminds us that “Love is lovelier the second time around,” but lovely as it may be, it can still be embarrassingly challenging.

Clearly, a great deal of fun was had by all while working on Carbon Dating. But perhaps not as much fun as you will have while watching this terrific Web series! Check it out on YouTube at this link:
