Silent Films Tribute
by
Indie filmmaker John K. Carpenter joins Movie Addict Headquarters for a "Silent Films Tribute" on January 10th. Carpenter has parlayed his love of film -- particularly silent comedy -- and 16 mm collecting into directing and starring in Late to Lunch, a delightful homage to silent filmmaking, which is available through Alpha DVD. Carpenter is also a noted film historian who has hosted a classic film program and lecture series featuring his own personal collection of 16 mm film prints that he has preserved and restored.
Because The Artist, another recent homage to silent movies, is receiving so much acclaim, Carpenter’s interview should be enlightening for listeners who want to learn more about this early cinema art form. Feeling strongly -- even at a young age -- that “this original, pure type of comedy should be revived,” Carpenter began making his own movies while in junior high and continued in high school and college. After graduating from college, he raised the money for Late to Lunch, his first 16 mm 45-minute reel re-creation of the era he loved so much, which has been shown theatrically and in New York film festivals.
Among the topics Carpenter plans to cover during this “Silent Films Tribute” are: how he became interested in silent movies; his favorite silent stars, movies and filmmakers; what current filmmakers can learn from the success of The Artist; and his own silent movie projects.
John K. Carpenter’s interview airs on BlogTalkRadio at 4 p.m. Eastern Time (1 p.m. Pacific Time) on Tuesday, January 10. During the live episode listeners are invited to call in and to participate in a chat. An archived segment will also be available.
