"Movies are all about entertainment," declares Denver film critic Reggie McDaniel. "If you want to learn a life lesson, live. If you want to be preached to, go to church. But if you want to be entertained, see a movie."

Nevertheless, even Rockin' Reggie, as he's known to his loyal KOA radio fans, is worried about today's movies. "They're getting raunchier, and the language is getting worse," he says.  That's why he's created The Everyday Parent's Entertainment Guide, a new Website devoted to providing parents with information needed to make important decisions about movies, plays, videos, TV, and video games. "Although this site is about children, it's not for them," McDaniel explains. "It's for parents."

McDaniel thinks the MPAA rating system leaves many parents confused. "For example, why do Open Range and Freddy vs. Jason have the same 'R' rating?" he asks. Not designed to replace the MPAA movie ratings, The Everyday Parent's Entertainment Guide will go deeper into what type of questionable behavior each film contains.

Until September 1, McDaniel's new site is free to the public. After that date, a small subscription fee will be charged.  When enough advertising is obtained for the site, it will be free again.

While talking with McDaniel on the phone, I realized he loves movies almost as much as I do. "I've been interested in movies ever since I was a little kid in St. Louis," he revealed. "There wasn't a lot to do to stay out of trouble except go to the movies, so my brother and I spent a lot of time at the Douglas Theater in the heart of the ghetto. It only cost 5 cents to get in, and even though serials like Flash Gordon and The Lone Ranger were old then, we enjoyed watching them." 

Later, according to McDaniel, he and his daughter went to as many movies as possible every weekend. Now, after 20 years in the military, McDaniel has gained quite a following with his entertaining movie reviews -- which are heard on numerous radio stations.   

McDaniel's radio career began when he called in to a KOA talk show to answer the question, "If you were trapped on a desert island, what would you eat -- a dog, a cat, or a monkey?"

Using his brand new cell phone, McDaniel told hosts Scott Hastings and Dave Logan, "I've eaten all three -- a monkey in Panama, a dog in Korea, and a cat in a St. Louis restaurant."

After the radio station broadcast that interaction as a promo, McDaniel called again, but this time to complain about how his upcoming barbecue was ruined because his guests were afraid of what he would serve.

To make a long story short, the station manager asked McDaniel what he would like to do if he had his own radio show. "Talk about movies," he replied, and he's been doing just that since 1997-1998. I know he's doing it well, because  whenever I'm discussing films with friends or family members, someone usually chimes in with, "Well, Reggie says  . . ."                 

Does that make me a bit jealous? You betcha -- but not jealous enough to stop appreciating what "Reggie says."
