Roger Ross Williams: Oscar-Winning Director
by
Roger Ross Williams, who won the latest Academy Award for Best Short Subject Documentary for Music by Prudence, drops by Movie Addict Headquarters on September 28th to discuss his experience writing and directing this inspiring film about Prudence Mabhena, lead singer of the band Liyana. Prudence is seriously disabled and has struggled to overcome many other hardships in Zimbabwe. Williams was inspired by the tremendous talent and dedication of this Zimbabwean native. He traveled several times to and from Zimbabwe before obtaining the completion funds needed to wrap up the story, which took about five and a half months.
Being born with a rare congenital disorder which affects the growth of bones and joints, Prudence has been confined to her wheel chair for as long as she can remember. However, she thrills everyone with her beautiful music. As Misha Zubarev observes in his review of Music by Prudence, “When Prudence closes her eyes -- and with the utmost lightness of being -- begins to sing her enchanted tunes of life, it’s as if every fiber of her body heightens itself to a level most of us would only dare to dream of. And she wishes to share her songs as well as the beauty that lights her up inside with the rest of the world.”
Williams has also produced TV shows for ABC, CBS, Comedy Central, Food Network and Michael Moore’s Emmy-winning series TV Nation. His credits include directing an episode for Undercover Boss and serving as director/writer for The Lives They Lost.
During this year’s Academy Awards Ceremony, Williams was interrupted while making his acceptance speech -- and this incident became one of Oscar’s most talked-about moments.
Roger Ross Williams’ interview airs September 28 on BlogTalkRadio at 4 p.m. Eastern Time (1 p.m. Pacific Time). During the live show listeners are invited to call in and to participate in a chat. An archived segment will also be available.
