What’s your viewing pleasure at the multiplex this September – romance, animation, thrillers, action, mystery, or comedy? Take your pick from the schedule of offerings below. But remember, all release dates are subject to change.

SEPTEMBER 1:

The American. In this dramatic thriller, George Clooney portrays an assassin who hides out in Italy while waiting for what he hopes is his last assignment. But guess what? Love comes along and complications ensue.      

SEPTEMBER 3:

Going the Distance. Can a long-distance romantic relationship work? Drew Barrymore and Justin Long play lovers who hope so. 

Machete. Betrayal and revenge take center stage in this action film about an ex-Federale out to wreak vengeance on his former boss. The cast includes Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin and Michelle Rodriguez.  

SEPTEMBER 10:

Resident Evil: Afterlife. Milla Jovovich plays the intrepid “Alice” again, and this time she’s trying to save survivors in a world ravaged by a virus infection that turns people into the Undead.

I’m Still Here. (limited)  What’s been happening to Joaquin Phoenix? This documentary deals with his move from acting to rapping.

The Virginity Hit.  A comedy about four guys and their adventures related to the loss of their virginity.    

SEPTEMBER 15:

Never Let Me Go. (limited) In this thriller, Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield play young adults who spent their childhood at a supposedly tranquil English boarding school -- and now must face a haunting reality.   

SEPTEMBER 17:

Leaves of Grass. (limited) An Ivy League professor and his twin brother try to take down a drug lord in this Tim Blake dramedy starring Edward Norton.

Easy A.  After reading The Scarlet Letter, a high school girl finds inspiration concerning how to advance her social status. The fine cast includes Emma Stone, Amanda Bynes, Cam Gigandet, Lisa Kudrow, Stanley Tucci, Patricia Clarkson, Thomas Haden Church and Penn Badgley.

The Town. Ben Affleck directs and stars in this crime drama about a thief trying to come to terms with his feelings for a bank manager and an FBI agent out to bring him down. Blake Lively and Jon Hamm also appear in key roles here.

Devil. Is the devil one of the people trapped in an elevator? We’ll have to see this intense mystery flick (based on a story by M. Night Shyamalan) to find out. Among the cast members are: Chris Messina, Joshua Pace, Kim Roberts and Bokeem Woodbine

Alpha & Omega. This animated feature follows the adventures of two young wolves  thrown together in a foreign land who must help each other in order to get home. Voice talent includes Justin Long, Christina Ricci, Dennis Hopper, Hayden Panettiere, Danny Glover and Chris Carmack.

SEPTEMBER 22:

You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger. (limited) Another Woody Allen romantic comedy, but just look at this wonderful cast: Anthony Hopkins, Gemma Jones, Antonio Banderas (be still my heart), Josh Brolin, Frieda Pinto and Naomi Watts!

SEPTEMBER 23:

Jack Goes Boating. (limited) Philip Seymour Hoffman makes his directing debut with this romantic comedy about two working class couples living in New York City.

SEPTEMBER 24:

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. This sequel to Wall Street (1987) stars Michael Douglas reprising his Oscar-winning role as the greedy Gordon Gekko. Also along for the ride are Shia Labeouf, Carey Mulligan, Charlie Sheen, Josh Brolin and Susan Sarandon.

You Again. I’m expecting lots of laughs from this comedy, mostly because funny lady Betty White joins its intriguing cast, which also includes Sigourney Weaver, Victor Garber, Kristen Bell, Kristin Chenoweth and Jamie Lee Curtis. It’s about amusing situations which can occur when enemies from the past show up and open old wounds. Better to laugh than cry when faced with challenges like that, right?

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. A beautiful animated film about good vs. evil in owldom. Lending their voices to the owls are Geoffrey Rush, Sam Neill, Helen Mirren, Abbie Cornish, Hugo Weaving and many others.

Waiting for Superman.  Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim takes on public education in this disturbing, eye-opening documentary.
