Gary King's Film Musical
by
Independent filmmaker Gary King visits Movie Addict Headquarters on March 16th to discuss his exciting plans for making a movie musical. Titled How Do You Write a Joe Schermann Song, Gary’s film is about an aspiring Broadway songwriter who jeopardizes his relationships and budding career after he begins working with a talented singer.
Gary’s previous independent films include the short thriller Favors, a comedy about speed-dating titled Hubris, Dismal -- a horror flick -- and the drama New York Lately. Another drama, What’s Up Lovely, is set for release this year, and his action/comedy/horror movie Death of the Dead is now in post-production.
As a huge fan of film musicals like Singin’ in the Rain, On the Town and West Side Story, Gary says, “I love them so much that it is a dream of mine to create one. I am thrilled to make a film in a genre that does not get much recognition anymore. It's something I hold close to my heart. I grew up watching musicals with my parents and was always in awe of the sheer talent of the actors on screen. . . I believe there is an audience out there still hungry for unique musicals with a well-told story. So here I am. Ready to work with some amazing people who will showcase their talents as true performers -- as singers, actors and dancers -- which is something rarely done on screen nowadays at the truly independent level (yes, there will be tap dancing in the film!!).”
Gary’s musical is currently in the fundraising stage via Kickstarter. He hopes to find a few cheerleaders who can help him spread the word that “we’re trying to make this project and are looking for people to help back the Kickstarter campaign.” Kickstarter is a unique “crowd-funding” approach that basically allows people to pledge different amounts and receive various “thank you” gifts in return (like the DVD, CD soundtrack, autographed script – even a visit to the set, etc.).
