Golden Globe Surprise
by
“My wife told me Matt Damon was going to win, so I didn’t have to worry about making a speech,” Robert Downey Jr. joked last night as he accepted his Golden Globe for Best Actor in the Musical/Comedy category. However, this gifted star of Sherlock Holmes must have spent some quality time thinking about his speech, for when he quoted from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle -- “Art in the blood is liable to take the strangest forms” -- it seemed highly appropriate.
Downey certainly looked every bit the winner at the televised 67th Annual Golden Globes Awards Show. In fact, he also earns my Best Dressed Award, hands down. Nevertheless, his Best Actor win came as a big surprise to me as well as to his wife. He won the honor over fellow nominees Matt Damon (The Informant!), Daniel Day-Lewis (Nine), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer) and Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man).
All five nominees deserve recognition, but like Susan Downey, I thought Damon was a sure thing. And I admit still being upset over the lack of critical acclaim for Downey’s brilliant performance last year in The Soloist -- which I consider his best one ever.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m delighted whenever Downey receives acclaim for his extraordinary acting talent. I loved his brainy, brawny Sherlock! It’s encouraging to know a sequel to Sherlock Holmes is already being planned.
Will Robert Downey Jr. be among the upcoming Oscar nominees? We’ll find out on Tuesday, February 2nd.
