As a documentary, Asif Kapadia's Amy doesn't celebrate the music of Amy Winehouse. This depressing creation spends two hours uncovering the singer's habits, namely bulimia (an eating disorder), alcoholism and drug abuse. Curiously, the little glimpses we get of song writing end up as barely explored footnotes.

Ultimately, editor Chris King crafts an overwrought celebrity case study. At heart, Winehouse was a jazz singer, happy to perform at small clubs. When fame put her in the spotlight, she couldn't handle the pressure.

Emotionally, it's tough to grasp why Kapadia made this film. If there's any passion in his work, it got left in the cutting room. Overall, Amy fails to acknowledge what made the singer so special. As such, I feel it's a missed opportunity. (Capsule review)
