Sleight of Hand

Regarding Daniel Benmayor’s Tracers, the term “parkour” immediately grabbed my attention. This refers to free running, a method of getting from point A to B efficiently. This often involves climbing or jumping using the city’s architecture as a platform.
For Cam (Taylor Lautner), money problems with the local Chinese mafia lead him to seek out a gang of thieves. The whole operation is overseen by Miller (Adam Rayner), a man with more secrets than friends. Cam already knows and later falls for the beautiful Nikki (Marie Avgeropoulos). Very soon, he pays his dues and they include him in a number of robberies.
Despite the relatively simple premise, Tracers features perfect timing. The quiet scenes allow us to get better acquainted with Cam. He’s a good kid fallen on tough times. Although we learn about his situation through dialogue, the action reinforces character. In other words, the measure of his drive and desperation only becomes apparent during the chase sequences. Crucially, Lautner performs most of the big moves himself.
If Premium Rush took the wrong road, then Tracers offers greater sleight of hand. Highly recommended! (Capsule review.)
(Released by Lionsgate Films and rated "PG-13" for intense violence, perilous action, sexual content and language.)
