Lots of Laughs
by Diana Saenger

It seems like comedian Melissa McCarthy, one of filmdom’s favorite funny ladies, can do no wrong. She received an Academy Award nomination for her hilarious role in Bridesmaids and has delighted fans in her roles on TV’s Mike & Molly. In Tammy, McCarthy plays a young woman facing one bad-luck happening after another. Her husband is having an affair. Plus, she’s lost her job, wrecked her car and has no money or place to go. Even though her mother (Allison Janney) has offered her a room, Tammy wants to “get out of town.”

Fortunately for her, Tammy’s grandmother Pearl (Susan Sarandon) wants to flee her daughter’s house as well -- and she has a nice bankroll. So Tammy and Pearl take off on a wild journey that includes reckless decisions, more accidents, lots of drinking for grandma and even some jail time for them both.

There are also some romantic elements for both gals. Pearl shacks up with Earl (Gary Cole), a guy she meets at a bar. And Earl’s son Bobby (Mark Duplass) -- who is supposed to keep an eye on his dad -- begins to be intrigued by Tammy.

When Tammy and Pearl need help escaping from their troubles they head to Pearl’s joyful cousin Lenore (Kathy Bates). Hilarity abounds when Lenore and her mate Susanne (Sandra Oh) host a huge lesbian party where Tammy and Pearl can’t help themselves from getting into even more trouble.

Tammy is written by McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone who also directed the movie. This funny comedy delivers lots of zaniness but also boasts moments of poignancy. The all-star cast members, including Dan Aykroyd and Toni Collette, keep things moving swiftly -- but McCarthy and Sarandon steal the show.

(Released by Warner Bros. Pictures and rated “R” for language, including sexual references.)
