September Movie Schedule
by Betty Jo Tucker

Sci-fi, horror, romance and comedy will fill our multiplex screens during September of 2009. And for movie musical fans like me, a remake of Fame cometh! Check out the schedule below, but remember all release dates are subject to change.

Theatrical Releases:

SEPTEMBER 4

Gamer. Gerard Butler portrays an online gaming star who’s out to win back his independence -- among other things -- in this futuristic action thriller.

Extract. Numerous problems face Jason Bateman’s character in this Mike Judge comedy about the owner of an Extract plant who’s worried about his unfaithful wife as well as being taken advantage of by his employees. Ben Affleck, Mila Kunis and J.K. Simmons also play key roles here.

Carriers. A viral pandemic causes a group of friends to panic, but that’s not the only danger they need to watch out for in this horror/thriller starring Chris Pine, Piper Perabo and Christopher Meloni.

All About Steve. Sandra Bullock’s character, who loves crossword puzzles, falls for a CNN cameraman played by Bradley Cooper in this comedy directed by Phil Traill and written by Kim Barker.

SEPTEMBER 9

9. This animated sci-fi fantasy is set in a nightmarish post-apocalyptic world and features the voices of Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connolly, Crispin Glover and Christopher Plummer.

SEPTEMBER 11

I Can Do Bad All By Myself.  Another comedy from the very prolific Tyler Perry. Oscar-nominee Taraji P. Henson stars as a heavy-drinking night club singer who wants nothing to do with her wayward niece and nephews. You can bet Madea has other plans for her!

The Other Man. Liam Neesan, Laura Linney and Antonio Banderas (be still my heart!) make a dramatic triangle in this film about infidelity and revenge.

Sorority Row. After sorority sisters try to cover up the death of one of their own, they are stalked by a serial killer. It must be getting close to Halloween!

Whiteout. It isn’t easy to track a killer in Antarctica, especially during six months without daylight. Kate Beckinsale stars as the U.S. Marshal assigned to this case. Others in the cast include Gabriel Macht, Tom Skerritt and Alex O’Loughlin.

SEPTEMBER 18

Love Happens. Aaron Eckhart plays a grieving widower who becomes a self-help guru. Can he find happiness with a florist portrayed by Jennifer Aniston? We’ll have to see this romantic character-driven movie to find out.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. How would you like to live in a town where food falls from the sky? Interesting weather forecasts ensue in this tasty (sorry, couldn’t resist) animated family film.

Pandorum. Amnesia aboard a space ship takes center stage here. Ben Foster and Dennis Quaid play two of the crew members struggling with this horrifying sci-fi problem.

Jennifer’s Body. Megan Fox plays a newly possessed cheerleader who’s out to kill male classmates. Will her best friend, portrayed by Amanda Seyfried, be able to stop her? Diablo Cody of Juno fame penned the screenplay for this comedy horror flick.

The Informant! A bi-polar whistleblower turns witness against the company in which he serves as vice-president. Matt Damon snagged the lead role, and the supporting cast includes Clancy Brown, Scott Bakula and Patton Oswalt.

Splice. Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley co-star in this sci-fi thriller about scientists who create a new animal species. Will they learn not to mess with Mother Nature?  You betcha.

SEPTEMBER 23

Astro Boy. This animated movie follows the adventures of a powerful robot child created by a scientist who lost his own son. Voice talent includes Nicolas Cage, Charlize Theron, Samuel L. Jackson, and Freddie Highmore.

Capitalism: A Love Story.  Michael Moore takes on the free-market economy in this documentary which he calls a war story, a crime story, a vampire story -- and a comedy.

SEPTEMBER 25

Surrogates. Bruce Willis portrays a cop investigating the murder of surrogate robots in this futuristic sci-fi action movie directed by Jonathan Mostow, one of my favorite directors.

Fame. Hooray -- a musical! Even if it’s a remake of the 1980 film, I’m happy. Here are some of the cast members: Kelsey Grammer, Bebe Neuwirth, Naturi Naughton, Debbie Allen, Charles S. Dutton, Megan Mullally, Kherington Payne (from So You Think You Can Dance).

Coco Before Chanel. This biopic about fashion icon Coco Chanel stars the lovely and talented French actress Audrey Tautou. Remember how delightful she was in Amelie

The Invention of Lying. Imagine a world where no one has ever lied. Then drop Ricky Gervais into that setting. Result? Things change and laughter may ensue. Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman should also add to the fun.
