Analyzing Reel People
by
Dr. Howard Gluss, co-author of Reel People: Finding Ourselves in the Movies, holds a Doctorate in Psychology and dual degrees in Drama and in Communication Studies. His background in both the arts and psychology has made him invaluable on matters of story, character, and the very nature of the creative process. He also hosts a popular radio show and is frequently called upon by directors, writers, actors and producers to assist them in bringing to life their most inspired creations.
The producer of Saving Private Ryan, Gary Levinsohn, calls Dr. Gluss’ book “an insightful analytical tool … not only to writers but also to anyone looking to better understand characters, and for that matter to understand themselves.”
David Parfitt, producer of Shakespeare in Love, describes Reel People as “a very thorough study of film personas -- a fascinating look into the psychology that lies behind a wide variety of character types.”
Among the many film characters analyzed by Dr. Gluss in Reel People are the following:
* Alan Swann (Peter O’Toole) in My Favorite Year
* Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) in Silence of the Lambs
* Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) in Sunset Boulevard
* Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson) in As Good As It Gets
* Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) in Wall Street
