Marching To Your Own Beat
by Diana Saenger

To say Nick Cannon is hot with kids is an understatement. The star/creator/executive producer of Nickledeon's The Nick Cannon Show has become a multifaceted icon. He even has his own record label. Along the way, Cannon had time to make Drumline (and Men in Black 2), an energetic, hip-hop story about a show band that performs for half times with an incredible line of drummers.

A team of 300 members take the field to show off their stuff, and if you've never seen this kind of action before, you're in for a real treat. Cannon is solid and authentic as Devon, a hip-hop drummer from Harlem who wins a scholarship for his skills on the drums, but one who must learn to polish his skills about life.

Cannon, who had tried his talents as a youngster on drums, harmonica and synthesizers, says the role was perfect for him. But he didn't realize it would require so much physical work. Cannon's determination to learn the art of drumming paid off in his accomplished performance.

"They shouldn't call this drummin'," he said. "This should be called drumnastics. I got sores on my hands from playing so much."

Orlando Jones (Vox in The Time Machine) plays the bandleader who has a problem with Devon's attitude, and Zoe Saldana (Kit in Crossroads) portrays Devon's love interest, Laila.

Drumline is a fun story for the whole family -- with some very good lessons about growing up.

(Released by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and rated "PG-13" for innuendo and language.)
