March Film Fare
by Betty Jo Tucker

Clive Owen pairs up with Julia Roberts to compete with the likes of superheroes, monsters, aliens, amusement parks, Playboy centerfolds, concert promoters, mysterious numbers, killers and kidnappers for our March 2009 box office attention. Check out the schedule below -- but remember all release dates are subject to change.

MARCH 6:

Watchmen. Another movie about superheroes? Yes indeed! The cast includes Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Ackerman, Patrick Wilson, and Matthew Goode.  Zach Snyder directs, using his creative stylistic approach (which I loved in 300).

MARCH 13:

Race to Witch Mountain. A sci-fi thriller about two siblings with paranormal powers who need protection from an evil organization. Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), Carla Gugino, AnnaSophia Robb, Garry Marshall, and Tom Everett Scott are among the many actors appearing in this “PG” rated movie.

The Last House on the Left. In this re-make of Wes Craven’s horror flick, Tony Goldwyn and Monica Potter play parents out for revenge against kidnappers. Why does Hollywood seem obsessed with re-makes of horror movies? Because they usually bring in big bucks at the box office.

Sunshine Clearing. Amy Adams and Emily Blunt co-star in this comedy about sisters who start up a very special type of cleaning service. With these two wonderful actresses, this film should be a hoot. Both Adams and Blunt can be very funny. If you don’t believe me, watch Enchanted and The Devil Wears Prada.

A Perfect Getaway. Killers stalk a honeymoon couple in this thriller starring Milla Jovovich, Steve Zahn, Timothy Olyphant, and Kiele Sanchez.

Miss March. Can a fella win back his girlfriend after waking up from a long coma? One problem: the object of his affection is now a Playboy centerfold. Cast includes Zach Cregger, Trevor Moore, Raquel Alessi, Molly Stanton.

MARCH 20:

Duplicity. Clive Owen and Julia Roberts play two corporate spies with a steamy past who join forces to outsmart their competitive bosses. Based on what I’ve seen in the previews, Owen and Roberts project great chemistry as a couple. Written and directed by Tony Gilroy (the man responsible for that terrific Michael Clayton film), this romantic thriller also features the always wonderful Tom Wilkinson and the versatile Paul Giamatti as the rival executives in question.

I Love You, Man. In this romantic comedy, Paul Rudd portrays a man trying to find a Best Man for his wedding. Jason Segel and Rashida Jones round out the trio here.

Knowing. Opening a time capsule leads to a mystery that Nicolas Cage’s character tries to solve in this thriller directed by Alex Proyas of I, Robot and Dark City fame.

MARCH 27:

Monsters vs. Aliens. An animated movie about a group of monsters called into action to save the world from aliens. The preview for this DreamWorks offering makes me smile every time I see it! Actors providing the voice talent include Kiefer Sutherland, Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon, Stephen Colbert and Hugh Laurie.

12 Rounds. Renny Harlin helms this action movie about a detective, played by John Cena, who must complete 12 challenges to free his kidnapped girlfriend.

Janky Promoters. Ice Cube and Mike Epps, portraying concert promoters, face serious problems and amusing situations (of course) when they try to book a superstar rapper. Ice Cube also wrote the screenplay.

The Haunting in Connecticut. Based on a true story, this horror movie depicts what happens when a family moves into a house that was once a mortuary. Virginia Madsen, Martin Donovan, Kyle Gallner and Elias Koteas appear in key roles here.
