Judy Garland Tribute
by
My pick for the most remarkable personality in the history of motion pictures is Judy Garland. She could do it all -- sing, dance, act in comedies or in dramas -- better than anyone else before or since.
Each time I watch one of Garland's many films, I'm amazed at her raw talent. Nobody haunts my movie memories quite like Judy singing "Somewhere over the Rainbow" in The Wizard of Oz. No one makes me laugh more joyously than Judy dressed like a tramp and cavorting with fellow bum Fred Astaire to the tune of “We’re a Couple of Swells” in Easter Parade. And nothing gets my dander up more than remembering Judy’s loss of the Oscar she should have received for her heart-wrenching performance in A Star Is Born.
Because Judy Garland ranks among the most beloved Hollywood stars of all time, it’s only fitting that “Movie Addict Headquarters” has scheduled a special tribute to this legendary actress and entertainer. On Tuesday, September 9, Lorna Luft -- one of Judy’s talented daughters -- will visit the show and join in celebrating her mother’s incredible contributions to the world of entertainment. Lorna is an accomplished performer in her own right. She’s won acclaim on stage, film and television. Plus she’s also a best-selling author, recording artist and Emmy-nominated producer. Her book, Me and My Shadows: Living with the Legacy of Judy Garland, was optioned by ABC-TV and turned into a riveting miniseries starring Judy Davis. Lorna served as co-executive producer on that project, which won 5 Emmy Awards.
Another of Lorna’s impressive accomplishments is a multi-media production, Songs My Mother Taught Me, a spectacular concert combining one of the world’s most familiar songbooks with her personal memories of her famous mother. A CD based on this event was released last year on First Night Records.
This special BlogTalkRadio show will also include James Colt Harrison, a popular “Movie Addict Headquarters” guest. James is the premier film critic for the La Jolla Village News and has written a history of MGM, the studio where Judy Garland made her wonderful movies. An avid Garland fan, James exclaims, “JUDY GARLAND? She's the all-time favorite of millions of fans, even today!”
James also reports previous contacts with Judy’s two talented daughters. “I interviewed Lorna Luft years ago. I was also an extra in Liza Minnelli's film Tell Me That You Love Me Junie Moon shot here in San Diego by Otto Preminger. So you see, I'm practically part of the family,” he quips.
The “Judy Garland Tribute Show” airs on Tuesday, September 9, at 4 p.m. Eastern Time, 1 p.m. Pacific Time, 2 p.m. Mountain Time. During the live show, listeners are invited to call in with their comments/questions and to participate in a chat. The call-in number is 646-478-5668. An archived segment will also be available.
