Fun Gumshoe Comedy
by Betty Jo Tucker

I can’t help it. Sometimes I love the dumbest movies. Take Cabin Boy, for example. I was the only person in the entire audience laughing at that one many years ago. Now here comes Rock Slyde, a silly comedy starring Patrick Warburton as an often clueless private eye fighting with the evil head of an outrageous cult, and I can’t stop chuckling every time I think about it. “You must be starved for humor,” my husband said to me.

Maybe so, but Warburton (Hoodwinked) puts just the right comic spin on his character, who comes across as a parody of iconic private eyes like Phillip Marlowe and Sam Spade. And Andy Dick (Blonde Ambition) is hilarious as Bart, the pompous leader of the House of Bartology, a fake religion he spreads through a strange substance placed in yummy cookies. The rest of the cast, including Rena Sofer (TV’s NCIS) as the gorgeous femme fatale and Elaine Hendrix (Spork) as a spunky secretary add to the fun, plus cameos from Jason Alexander, Eric Roberts, Lea Thompson and Tom Bergeron result in some amusing surprises.

Director/writer Chris Dowling (The Plight of Clownana) may not have delivered any important messages with Rock Slyde, but he sure tickled my funny bone.

The DVD “Behind the Scenes” bonus feature shows cast and crew having almost as much fun making this movie as I had watching it. (Capsule review.)

(Released by Gravitas Ventures and rated “PG-13” for mild language and violence.
