Promising Young Winner
by Betty Jo Tucker

I am pleased to report that the San Diego Film Critics Society (SDFCS) recently voted Carey Mulligan Best Actress of 2020 for her riveting performance in Promising Young Woman.

Mulligan has delivered impressive turns before in movies like An Education, The Great Gatsby, Suffragette, Drive, and Far From the Madding Crowd. But her work in Promising Young Woman comes across as something special indeed.

So, of course, I had to write a poem about it.

She studied medicine -- but left.

What could have made her that bereft?

Revenge is now her major goal.

She feels it deep within her soul.

“Promising Young Woman” takes us

on a journey hard to discuss.

Disturbing in a lot of ways.

We’re left with sad thoughts many days.

It’s not for everyone to see.

But brave viewers should be happy.

And Carey Mulligan proves here

she might be Actress of the Year.
