Double Treat

Skipping and dancing across the stage with such high octane energy that I’m exhausted even thinking about it, Miley Cyrus performs her Hannah Montana songs to the hilt in the Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert DVD. “I didn’t know there would be so much screaming,” says one harried dad to the camera during a break-away segment of this rousing presentation. And, quite frankly, I had to turn the volume down frequently while watching our newest pop star and her legion of young fans go wild at the top of their lungs.
Still, I couldn’t help admiring the enthusiasm Miley brings to her routines -- both as Hannah and herself. For the uninitiated, Miley first gained fame as the star of a Disney television show depicting an ordinary school girl (named Miley, of course) who leads a double life as a popular singer (Hannah Montana). Miley attends classes among students who are avid Hannah Montana fans but don’t realize their classmate is Hannah. Why not? Simply because Miley wears a blonde wig when assuming her show biz persona. Okay, that’s stretching credibility, I know, but it actually works!
In the television series, Miley’s father is Billy Ray Cyrus, the “Achy Breaky Heart” country singer, who’s also her real father. Billy Ray appears in this concert DVD, and it’s fun to watch the father/daughter relationship as they work on songs together. Happily, most of the backstage and rehearsal segments like this offer intriguing insights into what’s involved in putting on a major live production.
During the concert, Miley assumes her Hannah Montana identity to belt out such spirited numbers as “Rockstar,” “Life’s What You Make It,” “Nobody’s Perfect,” and “Just Like You.” As Miley herself, she also sings a number of songs, including “Start All Over,” “Girl’s Night Out,” and “The Best of Both Worlds.” My favorite number of the entire concert? Miley, as herself and backed up by a group of splendid dancers, performing a spirited version of “Let’s Dance.” This number definitely showcases Miley’s wonderful musicality.
Yikes! I almost forgot to mention the Jonas Brothers. Their fans would never forgive me, so I’m happy to report that the Jonas Brothers appear as special concert guests and receive almost as many screams as Hannah and Miley.
Although the DVD includes both the regular and 3-D version of this concert film, I had difficulty using the special glasses provided. But the same thing usually happens to me when trying to watch 3-D movies on the big screen, so consider the source. Four pair of these glasses are provided in the DVD package. Also, DVD special features include: “The Ultimate Personal Tour,” which enables viewers to spend a day with Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers; additional songs; and a sing-along with the movie.
When asked why she likes Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana so much, one little fan replied, “Because she’s pretty, funny and smart.” Hmm. Not a bad choice for a role model.
