Attention, wannabe filmmakers! Before jumping into the movie business, I suggest you watch Dr. Ravi & Mr. Hyde. This delightful comedy will surely help you understand the challenges of raising money and dealing with unscrupulous agents, skeptical colleagues and less-than-enthusiastic family members. By following the adventures of a real-life physician who decides to make a movie, you’ll also learn about the personality pitfalls involved. And, surprisingly, you’ll be charmed by Dr. Ravi -- even when he turns into his own version of Mr. Hyde.

Written, produced and directed by Dr. Ravi Godse, who also stars in the movie, Dr. Ravi & Mr. Hyde takes our hero on a journey from Pittsburg to South Africa as he tries to create a film that will bring him the greatness he always hoped to achieve. “I want to make a classic,” he declares. But his wife and his colleagues (who start avoiding him at the hospital) look on this new project with disdain. As Ravi continues to pursue his filmmaking goal, he becomes obsessed with it. The movie is all he talks about, so it’s no wonder he and his wife grow apart.

After enrolling in a film class, Ravi is used by a fellow student to make her boyfriend jealous, and this good deed adds to his problems at home. Ravi certainly has a lot on his plate, and we want everything to come out right for him, but we’re not sure how that can happen, which adds a welcome bit of suspense to the comic situations presented here.   

Dr. Ravi & Mr. Hyde may not feature slick production values -- and Ravi’s trip to South Africa seems to bog down his personal journey -- but this little movie offers simple pleasures not found in most of today’s mainstream releases. For example, we get to know and love the main character (with all his faults); we hear lots of witty dialogue; and we’re reminded how important it is to nurture relationships as we work to achieve our own special “greatness.” (Capsule review)
